In SSGXVIII/AIO, three years of imatinib after surgery, rather than one, improved survival in high-risk GIST.
SSGXVIII/AIO, trial NCT00116935 sponsored by the Scandinavian Sarcoma Group and the German AIO and published in JAMA in 2012, showed that three years of adjuvant imatinib after surgery, rather than one, improves recurrence-free and overall survival in high-risk gastrointestinal stromal tumour. It randomised 400 patients and met its primary recurrence-free survival endpoint at five years with a survival benefit that held at ten years. OnCo links it to sarcomas and GIST, KIT as a target and imatinib. Trials of five to six years of imatinib, SSG XXII and IMADGIST, suggest further recurrence-free benefit, and how long adjuvant imatinib should continue is the open question.
